3 India Seeks Self Rule Call for Independence
After World War I, Britain promised Indians greater self-government. They received only minor reforms instead. After a massacre in the city of Amritsar, the Congress Party in India called for full independence.

4 India Seeks Self Rule Cont.
Massacre at Amritsar April 13, 1919 killing several hundred and wounding hundreds more. Widespread anger to oppressive emergency laws left from WWI resulted in violence. Crowd there to celebrate a festival ( despite ban on public meetings) was fired on without warning.

Mohandas Gandhi brought Indians together to demand independence. The Power of Non-Violent Non-Cooperation Gandhi launched a series of nonviolent actions, including a boycott of British goods, and attracted much support.

6 Gandhi and the Salt March
Gandhi took a stand against the rule that Indians buy only British salt. March 12, 1930, Gandhi led a 240 mile march to the sea with 78 followers. By the time they reached the sea, thousands were present.

7 Gandhi and the Salt March Cont.
Gandhi and others were jailed. Some marchers were brutally beaten. Indians then began harvested sea salt to be sold on the streets. Britain was forced to give limited power to Indians and meet the demands of the Congress Party.

8 Looking ahead Britain brought the Indians into World War II, and millions of Indians helped the British cause. Not all willingly went to the war. Due to the strong feelings of nationalism and protests, India was granted independence after the war
