1 Hazardous Materials

2 Basic Vocab Hazardous waste
A waste with properties that make it dangerous or capable of having harmful effect on human health or the environment. Household Hazardous waste Waste generated by individuals in the home rather then by businesses or institutions. Example of Household products Cleaners, paints, pesticides, solvents, adhesives, motor oil Why important? When thrown away, these products become household hazards waste.

3 Reading Labels 1. MUST appear on front label Poison – highly toxic
Danger – highly toxic, corrosive, flammable, or reactive Caution – slightly toxic, irritating, flammable or reactive Warning – same as caution

4 Reading Labels 2. Toxic/Poisonous
Capable of causing injury or death of swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin Brake fluid, brass polish, rat poison, pesticides

5 Reading Labels 3. Corrosive
Can eat away materials and burn living tissue Oven cleaner, car battery, Pool and Spa cleaners, drain clog remover

6 Reading Labels 4. Reactive
Can react with air, water, or other substances and result in fire, explosions or toxic gases. Bleach, dish washing detergent, Chlorine (pool/spa)

7 Reading Labels 5. Flammable/Combustible
Can catch fire at relatively low temperatures Paint thinner, Spray paint, rubber cement, pesticides, hair spray

8 How do you know? Signal Words
Poison: HIGHLY toxic Danger: HIGHLY toxic, corrosive, flammable or reactive Caution/Warning: Slightly toxic, irritating, flammable, or reactive

9 Think of it this way… Highest Hazardous: Danger, Poison – Avoid products Moderate Hazard: Caution/Warning Safest: Does not use any of the other words – good.

10 Reading Labels Activity
Product Hazard Justification Clorox Regular Bleach Red – highest hazard Danger, Corrosive

11 Review of levels…. 10 minutes to familiarize yourself with a board
Will teach to 1-2 other teams Will have a “secret” grader

12 Individual susceptibility
Risk Factors Risk Factors Level of Hazard Amount of Exposure Individual susceptibility

13 Risk Factors 1. Levels of Hazard – see notes 2. Amount of Exposure
Route: Skin, Lungs, Stomach Frequency: number of times you are exposed + time between exposure Duration: length of time you are exposed

14 Risk Factors 3. Individual Susceptibility:
More sensitive  greater effects Less sensitive  less effects Related to factors: age, gender, health, genetics

15 Risk Factors Level of Hazard Red: High Hazardous
Yellow: Moderate Hazardous Green: Not hazardous Amount of Exposure Route Frequency Duration Individual susceptibility More or less sensitive Based on factors Age Gender Heath Genetics

16 My Life With chemicals Get out sheet from yesterday
What is your Toxic level? Add at bottom Listen/Read answers Answer discussion questions Discussion Questions: - separate piece of paper  USE vocab. Which actions do you think would be easy to do? Which would be hard? What are the trade-offs? Why is it important to reduce your exposure to these products?

17 Alternatives (Toxic-free Bingo!)
Lets try playing – what do you think? Look at answer key – replay Add answer key to notes.

18 Lets try some alternatives
Product Job Pro Con Vinegar and Baking Soda

19 Consumption Sustainability Unit

20 Sustainability 3 Needs Hazardous Products Consumption Your Choices

21 Basic Consumption Vocabulary
Resource: anything useful Renewable Resource: any natural resource that can be replenished naturally with the passage of time Non-renewable Resource: any natural resource from the Earth that exists in limited supply and cannot be replaced if it is used up; also, any natural resource that cannot be replenished by natural means at the same rates that it is consumed

22 Consumption intro Ecological Footprint Story of Stuff, Segment - intro
Lifecycle of stuff Pick 3 objects Read card List the renewable and non- renewable resources that are used in making that object.

23 #1. Extraction Pick a card Read your card
Fill in Is it Sustainable worksheet (might be some blanks Share with teammates Fill in teammate’s information on worksheet Watch Story of Stuff Take notes

24 #2 Production Watch Story of Stuff, Take notes
Follow along with reading – add to notes You’re the Boss

25 #3 Distribution Watch Story of Stuff, Take notes Listen

26 #4 Consumption Watch Story of Stuff Take notes Advertising Activity
A better way reading/questions Happy?  reflective questions

27 #5 Disposal Watch Story of Stuff 2. Garbage: Take notes
Scenarios – underline main ideas Share with teammates - Add to notes Decided as a team which would you like to do 2. Garbage: 5 most shocking things you learned 5 things my family buys that we could do without 5 things you can do to make a positive impact on the environment.
