1 Data Management and Acquisition Tutorial
Dr. Rufaidah Dabbagh, MBBS, MPH Family and Community Medicine Department

2 Tutorial Outline Designing your variable view Entering Data
Exploring data: (descriptive statistics) Correlations Comparing Means Chi-square test Odds ratio

3 Designing Variable View in SPSS
Before you start with your variable design on SPSS it is advised to prepare your code in advance.

4

5 Designing Code On variable view in SPSS you start entering each variable name. This cell usually doesn’t allow spaces between characters, so you can enter an abbreviation for your variable. Under “label” you can write the entire variable, whether it was a whole question or a statement.

6 Refer to SPSS software

7 Entering Data Data entry is simple after the code has been designed in the variable view Just enter the data as coded into each cell Take care of limits, width and variable type when entering data!

8 Exploring your data on SPSS
Descriptive statistics: Continuous variables (means, sd, median, interquartile ranges) Categorical data (frequencies and percentages) Graphs: Histograms to observe symmetry of data (continuous variables) Bar charts and pie charts (categorical data)

9 Analyzing data on SPSS T-tests: To compare means.
Used for continuous variables only If the p-value for the t test estimate is statistically significant (<0.05) then the two compared means are significantly different from each other in our sample. Examples: One sample t test Independent sample t-test Paired t-test

10 Analyzing data on SPSS Correlation:
This helps us test the linear relationship between two variables. The correlation coefficient value ranges from -1 to 1. Values that are closer to 1 (or-1) indicate a strong correlation The sign of the correlation (+ve or –ve) describes the type of correlation (positive linear relationship or negative linear relationship) – example?

11 Analyzing data on SPSS Chi-square test:

12 Analyzing data on SPSS Odds ratio:
