X-rays and Gamma rays are virtually identical except that X-rays are produced artificially rather than coming from the atomic nucleus.

4. Dental X-rays, Are they Safe?
The amount of radiation that patients are exposed to from dental x-rays is very small compared to daily exposure from things like cosmic radiation and naturally-occurring radioactive elements in our environment. In fact, the average American receives more radiation from sitting in front of computer monitors and televisions over the course of the year than from the x-rays taken at the dentist’s office. Further, most offices are now using digital sensors instead of film which require about 10% of the radiation. Lastly, it is standard of care to use a lead apron with a thyroid protection collar to further limit the small amount of scatter radiation from a dental x-ray.
