1 The Continuous Development of Student Writing
Whitney Young H.S. Selling your ideas is challenging. First, you must get your listeners to agree with you in principle. Then, you must move them to action. Use the Dale Carnegie Training® Evidence – Action – Benefit formula, and you will deliver a motivational, action-oriented presentation. WY 11/11/2018 Copyright © Dale Carnegie & Associates, Inc.

2 Begin by Recognizing Student Diversity...
Interests Educational/Writing Backgrounds Language constraints Open your presentation with an attention-getting incident. Choose an incident your audience relates to. The incidence is the evidence that supports the action and proves the benefit. Beginning with a motivational incident prepares your audience for the action step that follows. WY 11/11/2018

3 Some strategies and lessons we use to develop writing skills:
Daily journals Books we write (grammar, novels) Extra credit review papers Rewriting dialog in Shakespearean Language Imitations teach: Tone/Diction/Dialog/colloquialism Poetry in motion Essay tests PowerPoint Presentations Writing contests Next, state the action step. Make your action step specific, clear and brief. Be sure you can visualize your audience taking the action. If you can’t, they can’t either. Be confident when you state the action step, and you will be more likely to motivate the audience to action. WY 11/11/2018

6 How do we measure success?
Enhancing the writing skills of students is our number 1 goal. We measure this by: Standardized test scores Anecdotal evidence from alumni Current student feedback Individual classroom instructors’ test instruments WY 11/11/2018

7 What else do we need? Continued ability of Whitney Young HS to draw a highly motivated student body. Continued strong administrative support for our faculty. Continued parental support for the strategies currently in place. Continued development and support of the Friends of Whitney Young. WY 11/11/2018
