1 Activity 1: Our Global Community
What do you know about sustainability? What do indicators tell us about regions of the world? Task: Read p. 3. Define terms below in your science notebook Vocabulary: Sustainable Indicator Economic Environmental Social

2 After reading the introduction, discuss the following as a class:
What is an indicator? What are some everyday examples of indicators? This class discussion should take 5-10 minutes.

3 What do indicators tell us about regions of the world? Part A
Work with your table to complete steps 1-8. Review the Indicator Key provided in the Procedure. Complete step 9 with your table.Complete the data table which lists each region and record the amount of each indicator and place in your notebook. Do not calculate the amounts for the columns with asterisks, yet. Complete step 10; record the groups in your notebook Introduce the use of science notebooks in step 10. More information on how to do this can be found in your Teacher Resources.

4 Complete step 11 and record in your data table
After discussing with your group, answer bulleted questions in #12 in your notebook. Be sure you understand the phrase per capita, used in steps 11 and 12.

8 Discuss in your group the following questions, and be prepared to share with the class.
What did the presentation show about the sustainability of the global community if the world continues on its current path? Review the definition of sustainability. If appropriate, introduce the Evidence and Trade-offs (ET) assessment variable and Scoring Guide here. See your Teacher’s Edition for more information on how to do this.

9 Answer analysis questions 1 - 5 on page 7.
Revisit the Challenge Answer analysis questions on page 7. Assessment: Complete a CER answering the following challenge: Compare the two countries that are given to your group in terms of sustainabililty. Support your conclusion with evidence. Discuss as a group and write your own CER
