5” x 5” mesh (250 micron mesh) bag sewn on 3 sides
Example 4” x 4” prototype of a BDM material (actually is a piece of plastic shopping bag) NOTE: these pictures are intended as an illustration for the mesh bag study. I took this pictures from under a tree in my front yard using a piece of plastic shopping bag to serve as a BDM proxy. The mesh bag is the actual bag. Not shown are pictures showing the label for each bag and how to attach fishing line and a metal rod for future extraction. Hand auger

Pic not shown: place piece of BDM on top of 200 g soil
Fill bag with remaining 200g (oven dry equivalent) field soil on top of BDM piece. Add small label on special laser printed paper (not shown). Fill bag with ~ 200g (oven dry equivalent) field soil

Fold top seam over and staple multiple times to seal
Attach fishing line and metal rod and bury in soil (~7.5 cm) according to protocol directions (not shown)
