Definition A teaching methodology which is the process of “perspective transformation” where beliefs are revised and results in behavior changes. Goal: Transformational Learning

Encourages students to reflect on and share their feelings and thoughts in class. Establishes an environment characterized by trust and care. Facilitates sensitive relationships among the participants – listening with respect, empathetic. Reflects on own journey and transformation. Has a Biblical worldview.

Student Characteristics
Is honest. Speaks beliefs - not what the teacher want to hear Is ready and open to change. Attends class for transformation, not information. Accepts the Bible as the authority for faith and life.

Identify their beliefs about forgiveness. Examine what the Bible has to say about forgiveness. Choose to forgive.

Step 1: Activating Event
Anything that introduces the topic and triggers students to examine their own beliefs Use a case study, quote, picture, or story that does not fit their beliefs

Step 2: Identify Current Assumptions
Ask questions to identify beliefs/assumptions Ask question to reflect on where beliefs come from Who/what has influenced your beliefs? How did you come to this belief? Anticipate what students might believe

Identify Current Assumptions: Forgiveness
Debrief What was the woman’s response to Jean Valjean stealing their silverware and hitting the priest and her response when the police brought him to their home? What was the priest’s response? Put yourself in the movie as the woman or priest - How would you have responded?

In groups of 2-3 What does it mean to forgive? What does forgiveness NOT mean? What are your beliefs about forgiveness? Where did your beliefs come from? What keeps people from forgiving others? What happens to people who don’t forgive others? Come back into large group and report

Scenario Write a scenario from your own life where forgiveness is needed.

Role Play Select 3 people – all are incarcerated (A, B, C)
A and B are talking – A is depressed and shares in confidence that he got a letter that his wife wants a divorce. B listens and encourages A. B shares the information about A with C, breaking confidentiality. C makes fun of A by calling him a loser and unable to keep his marriage together. A choice – to forgive or not to forgive.
