Appreciative Planning & Action Introductions
Appreciative pairwise Interviews Meet a ‘stranger’ – pick unfamiliar partner Interview each other (15 min. each) Questions: Tell me a story about a time when you felt you made a real difference, a real contribution, a time when you felt proud, excited – in your life, your family, your community What was your own particular role? What factors contributed to your success? Introduce your partner to the group 1 min. summary introduction with highlights of their story and role Find ‘stranger,’ one unknown, or in case of groups working together, the one least well known to you; seek person of opposite gender, background, or origin where possible

What did we learn from our interviews? What factors led to success? -- As participants to share the reasons for the successes they uncovered, the things that helped make for success

Appreciative Planning & Action “Problem to Opportunity”
Learn an appreciative approach to problem solving Choose the worst problem you can think of We will turn your worst problem into a positive opportunity in just an hour or two Problems are either Things that discourage us and drag us down… or Opportunities for achieving great things… It’s our choice….! Remind participants this will be a short, rapid exercise to show the power of APA approach; it will not try to go deep into either problems or opportunities, but instead will demonstrate how the process works

“The Worst Problem….” -- Brainstorming -- “The Worst of the Worst”
Get many ideas of worst problems from participants… Then seek consensus on the ‘worst” of all of them… or a “Worst Problem” that combines elements of several bad ones.

Problem Tree Trunk is ‘Worst Problem’ – Leaves are results of the problem – earth contains roots of the problem Ask participants to fill in leaves and roots or have them call them out for Facilitator to write on chart Ask participants to fill in faces for the two circles… and write a word under each one about how they feel about the prospects of solving the problem. (eg. Sad faces,’hopeless’ ‘impossible’ )

Problem to Opportunity The ‘positive opposite’ of the ‘worst problem’
Examples: Problems War Death, destruction Conflict, violence HIV/AIDS Opportunities Peace Life, creation Harmony, caring Healthy, safe-sex Have participants brainstorm other problems and positive opposites; then translate the ‘worst problem’ to its positive opposite The ‘positive opposite’ of our ‘worst problem’ Problem: Positive Opposite: This is our Affirmative Topic

Discovery of the best, of success, of what works
The Search for ‘the best,’ ‘what works,’ successes concerning our affirmative topic Pairs interview each other (5 min. each): Share personal positive stories, experiences that illustrate the affirmative topic Each pair joins with another pair (or 2) to form group of 4-6 Introduce your partners and share short summaries of their stories 15 min

Dream of even better, what we want more of…
Share your personal dreams of life, a world full of the best, of what we want more of Draw a picture together of the year 2020, of what this looks like for our children, our grandchildren – of a world full of the best 10 min

Design a plan, strategy for achieving the Dream
Outline the main elements of a strategy, an overall plan for achieving the Dream Summarize these on your picture in 3-5 bullet points 10 min

Delivery Action Plan to Get Started
Write a short action plan for the coming week to get started on implementing, Delivering, your Design for achieving your Dream Each person take a task from the action plan that you want to work on Each person write your personal commitment on your plan 15 min.

“Do It Now!” Choose one thing from your tasks, one small thing you can do right now to get started… a small first step “Do It Now !”

Sharing Dreams and Designs
Each team makes one minute presentation summarizing the team’s Dreams Designs Delivery “Do It Now!” Each person shares his/her Personal Commitment 5-10 Min. Lead group in clapping vigorously after each person shares his/her commitment

Success Tree 5 Min As for ‘Problem Tree’ the trunk is the ‘opportunity’ – affirmative topic, leaves are the results from achieving the positive result, roots/earth includes root causes of the success, achievement Have participants draw face in the circles that represents how they feel now about the opportunity; add a word that summarizes this feeling (eg: happy faces, ‘joyful,’ ‘successful,’ ‘happy’

What Happened? Only about an hour ago you felt the problem was ‘hopeless’ Now you are engaged in action addressing the opportunity, and feel encouraged What changed?

Participants will conduct a brief evaluation of the day’s activities, learning the basics of APA for evaluation – Appreciative Evaluation, or “A-Valuation”

Are we having fun yet? “The Morning News” Energizers & Activities
Participants are asked to volunteer to serve as reporters for The Morning News tomorrow… summarizing the highlights of today… news format… entertaining… Volunteers are also asked for leading energizers and entertainment – for tea breaks and/or end of the day, or evening fun.
