2. Warm Up What do you call the top and bottom numbers in a fraction?
In order to add or subtract what is the one thing you must have?
What is a common denominator and how do you find one?
If the problem has a mixed number, what should you do first?
How do I change a mixed number into an improper fraction?
What if my answer is an improper fraction, how should I complete the problem?

3. First of all, what makes up a Fraction?
A fraction has two parts to it:
A Numerator (the top number)
And a Denominator (the bottom number)

4. Common Denominator
Before you can add or subtract fracitons you need a “common denominator”. This means the bottom numbers of each fraction must be the same.
½ + ¾ Cannot be added together... Yet. 2/4 + ¾ Can be added because the denominators are “common” (the same)

7. Mixed Numbers to improper fractions
Multiply the denominator by the whole number. Add the numerator and put back over the denominator. = =

9. Adding Fractions
All rules about adding and subtracting negative numbers still apply.
Only add the numerators!
Step 1: Find common denominator
Step 2: Add or subtract numerators using the addition rules
Step 3: Simplify answer

10. Adding Fractions

I always must have a common denominator before I can add or subtract fractions.
Rule 1: If the signs are the same I add and keep the sign
Rule 2: If the signs are different I subtract and keep the sign of the larger number.

11. Subtraction
All rules about adding and subtracting negative numbers still apply.
Only add the numerators!
Step 1: Find common denominator
Step 2: Use subtraction rule to make an addition problem if 1st number is not larger
Step 3: Follow addition rules and only add or subtract numerator
Step 4: Simplify answer

12. Subtracting Fractions

Rule: ADD THE OPPOSITE
Once I change the problem to addition I use the addition rules to complete my problem.
