like a piece of a whole pizza or a whole pie A fraction is also a part of a set like in a dozen cupcakes

5 What does a fraction look like?

6 Numerator and Denominator
Numerator – The number on top that tells how many equal parts are described in the fraction. Denominator – The quantity below the line in a fraction. It tells the number of equal parts into which the whole is divided.

8 Parts of a Set Example - We made 6 cookies. 1 is peanut butter and 5 are chocolate chip. How would you write the number of peanut butter cookies as a fraction. 1 the number of peanut butter cookies 6 the total number of cookies

16 Proper Fraction A Proper Fraction has a top number (numerator) less than its bottom number (denominator) Example: 3 2 8 7

17 Improper Fraction Fraction in which the numerator is bigger than the denominator. You must DIVIDE to make it into a mixed number. EX: 25 4

18 Number that contains a whole number and a fraction.
Mixed Number Number that contains a whole number and a fraction. Ex: 3 ½

19 Greatest Common Facter
Also known as GCF The largest number that divides evenly into two or more numbers. Used when simplifying fractions

20 Least Common Multiple The least common multiple of the denominators of two or more fractions. Ex: 4/8 and 5/6 Multiples of 8: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56 Multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48
