Gather The purpose of the tutor reflections are to 1. Enable staff and students to reflect upon the schools vision and values. Provide staff and students with an opportunity to explore the impact of faith and the teachings of Jesus in today’s world. (SIAMS Framework Nov 2017)

4 A world of difference Word 7 foreign students recently joined Ilfracombe Academy. For 4 to 10 weeks, they are living away from their countries and their families.

5 They come from Turin, Lille, Hamburg and Bern.

Word How many languages do they speak? At 15 years old, Carola and Anna speak Italian, English, French… and started to study German 2 years ago.

A world of difference Word How many languages do they speak? At 16 years old, Vasco speaks German and English… and a bit of French.

Word How many languages do they speak? At 16 years old, Inès speaks French, English, copes in Spanish and has studied German for 4 years. She also does Latin! Louis speaks French, English, and Spanish.

A world of difference Word What do they think about languages? “We don’t necessarily like languages and we’re not very good at it, but we know it’s important to find a job and discover other cultures” “We would like to travel around the world, meet different people and discover new places and cultures. It’s also important if you want to study or work abroad.”

A world of difference Word Why did they decide to live abroad for several weeks? “Besides being an unforgettable experience of the culture, I can get a new kind of education, improve my English and be more confident when I speak this language.” Vasco, 16 years old, from Bern

A world of difference Word Why did they decide to live abroad for several weeks? “I came here to improve my English and to learn more about the people and culture. I kind of needed a break from Germany because I was bored.  I wanted to make friends and learn more about myself: what I want, what I like or not. Traveling is the best opportunity to make experience. I’m already grateful for this trip and all the good friends I made.” Farah, 16 years old, from Hamburg

12 A world of difference Word Think about how you would feel if you were years old and abroad on your own for several weeks. Who would you miss? Would you be nervous? Would you be excited?

13 A world of difference Dismiss May you be inspired by the courage of these 7 students. May you show respect for other cultures. May you find the kindness to greet them in their own language. Bonjour ! Guten Tag! Buongiorno!
