11 Characteristics of a Gift
A gift is a voluntary contribution, for which the contributor receives no bargained-for benefit, and requires nothing in exchange beyond an assurance that the intent of the contribution will be honored.  There is no expectation to receive anything in return The funds are irrevocable The donor expresses or clearly implies an intent to give Acceptance does not influence the research scope and supports the mission of the university Provides recipient with the maximum flexibility to conduct its mission

12 Characteristics of a Grant
Usually awarded to state, local government, colleges and non-profits and in some cases is renewable. A grant is typically categorized by a CFDA number The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance is a collection of Federal programs, projects, services, and activities that provide assistance or benefits to the American public. It contains financial and nonfinancial assistance programs administered by departments and establishments of the Federal government.
