System – a group of parts that work together in an organized way
What is an example of a system?

Subsystem – smaller systems that exist within larger systems
How are subsystems related to systems?

5. Diagramming Systems What does a diagram show?
Open-loop system – when a system has no way to measure or control its product
Includes 3 parts:
Input – the resources, ideas, and activities that determine what needs to be accomplished (idea)
Process – the conversions of ideas or activities into products by using machines and labor (action)
Output – what the system produces (outcome)

6. Diagramming Systems
Closed-loop system – a system that has a way of automatically controlling or measuring its output
Contains everything from an open-loop system and includes:
Feedback – the part of the system that measures and controls the outcome of the system
Serves as a bridge between input and process
Ex: heater in fish tank turns off when it reaches a certain temperature

7. Diagramming Systems
Controls are any part of a system that can be adjusted
Manual control – a device that requires a human operator
Automatic control – a device that can be programmed and then continues to operate without human intervention
Feedback and control systems are important to keep systems running smoothly with little human involvement

8. What is a life cycle?
Stages of a product’s life cycle include: design, material extraction, material processing, manufacturing, packaging and transportation, use and reuse, and recycle or disposal
Life cycle analysis – a way of estimating the environmental impact of a product through its entire life
