Overview (cont.) What is expected out of Referees?
Safety is #1 Safety of the player is our #1 Job Fast and reliable communication with me Availability and acceptance of games done on time Show Effort on the field Call what you see Look to improve Gain more game exposure Gain confidence on the field Make money Know the rules of competition and the LOTG Call the fouls. At the stage and age group, fouls not called will lead to trouble for you, the crew and us. Do not let the little things get out of hand. A foul is a foul. Be firm and blow the whistle with authority. Standing I the middle of the field gives the wrong the impression. Move and get in position to make the call. No one will argue if you are close the play. Do not call a foul because you heard a coach or parent yell it out. Call what you see. Do not be influenced 11/11/2018

HOLD ON TO THE PASSCARDS BUT DO NOT FORGET TO GIVE THEM BACK!!!
MYSL Procedures HOLD ON TO THE PASSCARDS BUT DO NOT FORGET TO GIVE THEM BACK!!! Hold on to cards in case there is an issue with the coach or player If you eject a player, not having a card will prevent that player from playing next game. Do not take excuses for players not have a card. Black and white scenario- card = play, no card = does not play 11/11/2018

MYSL Procedures U10 Law 8 – The Start and Restart of Play - Conform to IFAB except: The opponents of the team taking the kick-off are at least eight (8) yards from the ball until it is in play. Law 14 – The Penalty Kick No penalty kicks shall be awarded to or taken by either team. All fouls committed inside the penalty area that would normally result in a penalty kick will be moved outside the penalty area to the point parallel to the goal line closest to where the foul was committed and a direct free kick awarded Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct - Conform to IFAB except: There are no penalty kicks. (See Law 14) Keeper distributions (punts, drop kicks and throws) may not travel in the air over the halfway line. An Indirect free kick from midfield is awarded to the other team if this happens. When a player deliberately heads the ball or attempts to head the ball in a game, an indirect free kick (IFK) should be awarded to the opposing team from the spot of the offense. If the deliberate header or attempt occurs within the goal area, the indirect free kick should be taken on the goal area line parallel to the goal line at the point nearest to where the infringement occurred Law 16 – The Goal Kick - Conform to IFAB except: Opposition players to retreat into their own half of the playing field on goal kicks. US Youth Soccer recommends that opponents should remain in their own half until the ball is in play. The team taking the goal kick does not have to wait for the opposition to retreat and has the option to restart the game beforehand should they so choose. The ball is in play when it is kicked directly out of the penalty area. 11/11/2018

Dealing with Coaches Introduce yourself to the coaches
Firm hand shake Do not make extra work for yourself Don't let the coaches intimidate you Be confident in your knowledge of the LOTG Remain calm Coach steps over the boundaries- deal with him Ask, Tell, Dismiss Do not accept “last week the ref let me do..…” Don’t make extra work for yourself by talking to much. Quick hello and introduction, let them know when you expect to start the game and when you will check the players in Firm hand shake Remain calm. If someone is hollering at you, don't yell back at them. Speak respectfully and quietly, so the coach must quiet down to hear you However, once the coach steps over the boundaries of the game and begins to make his comments personal or abusive, you must deal with it. Slowly and calmly walk over to the coach. In a polite and respectful way, inform the coach that this type of conduct is unsporting and continuing with this type conduct will result in his or her removal from the game. If the behavior continues – respectfully and professionally ask the coach to leave. If the coach refuses to leave, give the coach a warning that if he or she does not leave, you will end the game. If the coach does not leave in a reasonable amount of time (approximately 30 – 60 seconds), end the game. Be sure to file a very detailed report with the league so there is a good understanding of why the game was ended early 11/11/2018

Dealing with Players Check players in on time Take charge of the game
Quick introduction and instructions (do not lecture) No cast, jewelry or anything that can injure other players (Final decision is yours alone) Take charge of the game Remember to blow the whistle with confidence Deal with dissent Talk to them before it gets out of hand Talk to the coach about a player – warn of upcoming dismissal If you have a difficult player dissenting or doing something else to disrupt the game, at a stoppage of play, issue a caution to them and let the player know that kind of behavior is unacceptable. If the player still insists on being difficult, use a well delivered warning to let them know that you have just about reached the limit of what you are going to take. 11/11/2018

Dealing with Parents Do not engage the parents Remain calm.
Do not get into discussions or arguments with the sidelines Report any misbehaviors or misconducts If you hear abuse coming from the sideline, engage the coaches Engage both coaches about sideline behavior Ask him to speak with the offending spectators, and let him know that if the behavior continues, the game will not 11/11/2018
