Moon Facts The moon is earth’s natural satellite. The moon revolves around Earth. The same side of the moon is always facing the Earth. As the moon makes one REVOLUTION AROUND THE EARTH, it also makes one ROTATION on its AXIS The moon takes 29 ½ days to complete one revolution around Earth It’s the only “world” humans have walked on

What causes the cyclical moon’s phases?

The counterclockwise revolution of the Moon around the Earth makes the Moon appear as if it is changing shape in the sky. The Moon’s phases are actually caused by the different angles from which we see the lit part of the Moon's surface. The half of the moon facing the Sun is always lit up.

The diagram below shows the Moon in various positions in its orbit around the Earth. Notice that half the Moon is always lit by the Sun.

How can we determine which phase can be seen from Earth?
When determining Moon phases, first find the location where the Moon would be directly between the Earth and Sun. This begins the Lunar Cycle and is known as the New Moon phase.

Since the Moon does not give off its own light, it just reflects the light of the Sun, the phase you see when you look at the Moon depends on its location in relationship to the Sun and Earth.

MOON PHASES New Moon: the entire lit portion of the moon is facing AWAY from the earth Full Moon: The entire lit portion of the moon is facing TOWARD the earth.

MOON PHASES Waxing: the RIGHT portion of the moon seems to GROW.
Waning: The left portion of the moon seems to SHRINK

After the Full Moon occurs, the Moon gradually becomes less lit until it arrives back at its New Moon position.

Objects like the Earth and Moon cast shadows when they block sunlight.
An “eclipse”: when the Moon or the Earth blocks the Sun, causing a shadow to be casted.

There are two kinds of eclipses: solar eclipse and lunar eclipse.

Solar eclipse: the moon gets between the Sun and the Earth.
The Moon blocks the sunlight casting a its shadow on Earth

Solar eclipses happen during the day and are only possible during the new moon phase.

Lunar eclipse: the Earth is between the Sun and Moon
Lunar eclipse: the Earth is between the Sun and Moon. Earth blocks the sunlight and casts a shadow on the moon.

Tides: A tide is a rise in the Earth’s water levels caused by the pull of Moon’s gravity and the Sun’s gravity. Spring tides: when the Sun and Moon’s gravities pull TOGETHER on Earth’s oceans.
Spring tides have the HIGHEST HIGH TIDES and the LOWEST low TIDES. Spring tides happen at the FULL moon or the NEW moon, when the Sun and Moon pull together

If a high tide happened at 10:00 AM, the next high tide is at 10:30 PM (12 and a half hours later!) The tides are cyclical & predictable a high tide happens every: 12.5 hours (~12 hours and 30 minutes) When would the next high tide occur if the last one happened at 10:00 AM?
