4. EVOLUTE basic principles
Readhead sensor is analogous to a digital camera
Image of scale is taken by readhead
Raw data extracted from image and processed
Error checking algorithm extrapolates the next reading and compares with actual for enhanced safety

Readhead sensor is analogous to a digital camera.
Image of scale is taken by the readhead on receipt of a position request pulse.
Raw data is extracted from the image.
Digital signal processing is performed and fine position is determined by interpolation.
Digital absolute position code is produced which is subsequently interpreted by reference to a look-up table (shown).
Position information is determined by separate ‘error checking’ algorithms that eliminate the risk of common cause failure.
