GLASS CEILING An invisible limit in corporations and other organizations above which it is difficult or impossible for women to rise in the ranks.

Does It Really Exist? In 1991, the U. S. Department of Labor defined glass ceiling as "those artificial barriers based on attitudinal or organizational bias that prevent qualified individuals from advancing upward in their organization into management-level positions." The department's Glass Ceiling Commission (1991-1996) studied these barriers not only as they apply to women, but as they apply to minorities as well.

The 2006 Celluloid Ceiling Report studied films of 2006 with combined domestic box office grosses of approximately $8.9 billion. It found women comprised 7% of directors, 10% of writers, 16% of executive producers, 20% of producers, 21% of editors, and 2% of cinematographers in the films studied.films of 2006 Women in the Audience Supporting Women Artists Now (WITASWAN). The WITASWAN mission is to convince women that the best way to puncture the celluloid ceiling is to use "the power of the purse": buy tickets to movies made by women directors and screenwriters, rent DVDs made by women directors and screenwriters, etc. Celluloid Ceiling
