SAY The dinner was to be at Simon’s house. Martha was to serve the meal.

SLIDE 6=SAY Six days before Passover, Jesus arrived in {Beth-ehny=Bethany}. They were excited about the dinner they prepared for Jesus. And Mary was especially excited about the special gift she had to honor Jesus.

SAY Nard grows in the Himalaya mountains, and was imported into {Pal-es-tine=Palestine}. It was very expensive.

SAY Mary took the costly oil and poured every bit of it on Jesus. Then she unbound her long hair and she wiped Jesus’ feet with her hair.

SAY A respectable Jewish woman did not usually unbind her hair in public. To attend to a guest’s \emp\ feet was usually the job of a servant.

SLIDE 10=SAY But Mary wanted to honor Jesus with a gesture of reverence and devotion.

SAY But Judas, the apostle who later betrayed Jesus, was not interested in honoring Jesus. In fact, Judas was angry!

SAY Why wasn’t this perfume sold, and the money given to the poor? It was worth what a man would make working for a whole year!

SLIDE 11=SAY We later learn that Judas did not really care about poor people. Actually, he was a thief. He sometimes helped himself to the money which belonged to all the apostles.
