3. Early HISTORY OF Russia
Russian history started with Kievan Rus, the fertile area of present day Ukraine
Slavs moved into southern Russia.
SLAVS: people from the forests north of the Black Sea
Russian legend says that the Slavs invited the Viking chief Rurik to be their king in the 9th century. In 862, Rurik founded Novgorod (Important City of Russia).

4. Byzantine on Russia
Constantinople sent missionaries to convert the Slavs to Christianity
863- Greek monks adapted Greek alphabet so they could translate the Bible into Slavic languages. It became the script still used in Russia and Ukraine
Russians now had a written language, forming a class of educated people
They adapted Byzantine art, music, and architecture

5. Kiev A City in Ukraine Kiev was founded on the Dnieper River by Oleg
Easy access to trade with Constantinople
Kiev grew into a principality
PRINCIPALITY: small state ruled by a prince
Society was strictly divided between classes
Gradually the line between Slavs and Vikings vanished
Kiev became the center of the first Russian State & a Vital Trade Center

7. Kiev becomes orthodox
In 957, Princess Olga converted to Christianity
Olga’s grandson Vladimir converted to Christianity in 989 and forced all of his people to convert
Beliefs and traditions of Eastern Orthodoxy flourished in Kiev

8. Vladimir, and his son Yaroslav the Wise, expanded Kiev’s power

Yaroslav created a legal code, built the first library in Kiev, and helped Christianity prosper
Kievan state began to decline when Yaroslav died
Yaroslav divided the state among his sons, causing civil war

9. MONGOLS In the mid-1200s, the Mongols fought their way into Russia.
MONGOLS: ferocious group of horsemen from central Asia
Kiev falls in 1240 to Genghis Khan’s grandson, Batu Khan
Mongols ruled much of Russia for the next 200 years.
Mongol rule cut Russia off from Western Europe, therefore cutting Russians off from the advancements in arts and sciences taking place in Europe

Between 1462 and 1505, Ivan III, known as Ivan the Great, gained rule over most of northern Russia
Took the title “Czar”
Ivan the Great passed on absolute rule to successors, and Ivan IV increased his power to the extreme, earning the title “Ivan the Terrible”
Moscow was founded in the 1100s
Moscow’s princes grew strong under Mongol rule throughout the 1300s
