Continuing Professional Development
CPD has been defined as, “. . . any process or activity of a planned nature that provides added value to the capability of the professional through the increase in knowledge, skills and personal qualities necessary for the execution of professional and technical duties, often termed competence. It is a lifelong tool that benefits the professional, client, employer, professional association and society as a whole and is particularly relevant during periods of rapid technological and occupational change.” Professional Association Research Network – UK

WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES OF CPD? CPD activities must extend the knowledge and skills of the professional. The major objectives intended are to: Develop in knowledge, skills and professional conduct. Promote members to be technically competent and up to date in relevant areas. Maintain parity with like minded professional bodies outside Zimbabwe.

WHAT IS CPD TO A MEMBER? Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a commitment by Members of the Real Estate Institute of Zimbabwe to continually update their skills, knowledge and capabilities in order to remain professionally competent, relevant and achieve their optimized potential.

Components of a successful CPD Program
Targeted. The content should be relevant to the members needs and relate to their regular professional experiences; Aligned. No single activity is universally effective. Hence complimentary areas must be developed that reinforces a holistic training perspective. Content. Successful development must consider both subject knowledge and suitable delivery methods. Activities. Successful development includes formal learning and active informal training. External input. Constructive external input provides new perspectives and challenges orthodoxies; Collaboration. Peer support gives participants an opportunity to work together and refine new approaches; Leadership. Effective leaders get involved in development, define opportunities and provide the support needed to embed change.

Structured CPD Activity
Tertiary courses delivered by or under the auspices of academic or educational institutions, commercial organisations or professional bodies, Courses , conferences , seminar s, workshops , lectures delivered by the Real Estate Institute or other competent professional body, Technical or research groups established by the Real Estate Institute or other professional body. The groups should have defined objectives and a structured operational methodology. Time spent on technical matters may count for CPD, but time spent on the groups’ administration matters must be excluded.

Structured CPD Activity
Researching and writing technical and related papers presented at conferences, seminars, lectures and the like for the professional development of real estate and other professions, Employer provided courses, lectures or other structured learning related to maintaining or developing professional knowledge, skills and related learning, Courses may be taken face- to- face, distance learning, e- learning or other method and include a variety of materials include audio and video material .

Self-regulated or Informal CPD
Informal CPD is any self-managed learning that is relevant or related to your professional role. This could include activities such as private study, on-the-job training, attendance at informal seminars or events where the focus is on knowledge sharing. Self regulated CPD may include: Reading professional journals, technical bulletins and the like where the material is relevant to professional practice, and Research and writing technical and related material for publication in professional journals and the like, but excluding time spent on publication design, typesetting and related publishing activities.

Proof of participation in CPD activities
The member must submit up to date CPD records and evidence to the Institute. If available copies of certificates must be submitted. Evidence can include: Assessment reports. Attendance lists. Certificates. Detailed diary notes. Employer reports. Enrolment records. Statutory declarations. Transcripts.

Minimum CPD hours to be undertaken during a three year cycle.
A minimum 10 hours of CPD per annum and 40 hours within three years are required.

CPD Hours Allocation EDUCATION AND TRAINING
8 hours per subject enrolled for; 4 hours per class attendance and/ or assignments; 4 hours for examination/s; 40 hours for 1 year certificate obtained; 40 hours maximum for each year of studies. 40 hours for a one week course provided the professional passed the exams at the end of the course; 32 hours for a one week course if there was no examination or the professional failed the examination/s at the end of the course. 8 hours will be added should s/he pass the examination at a later date.

CPD Hours Allocation CONFERENCES/ SEMINARS/ WORKSHOPS 8 hours for a 1 day conference/ seminar/ workshop with dinner/ cocktail; 6 hours for a 1 day conference/ seminar without dinner/ cocktail; 12 hours for a 2 day conference with dinner/ cocktail; 10 hours for a 2 day conference without dinner/ cocktail 16 hours for a 3 day conference. 2-4 hours for watching 1-3 day conference DVD, respectively.

RESOLUTION NO. 7, AT THE 2014 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING IN TROUTBECK, ADOPTED THE INCLUSION OF THE CPD POLICY UNDER THE MEMBERSHIP AND PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT BYE-LAWS.
