Executive Summary THR’s healthcare delivery system includes a very large number of patients with Behavioral Health diagnoses Serving these THR patients as well as community clients throughout North Texas is an important focus and challenge for THBH

BH Volume In 2017, across all THR services 27,553 primary behavioral health encounters were provided: 20,320 primary Psychiatric encounters occurred; this is 74% of all primary behavioral health encounters at THR 7,253 primary Alcohol/Drug encounters occurred; this is 26% of all primary behavioral health encounters at THR and, of these: 3,114 primary Alcohol/Drug encounters were for dependence (addiction) In 2016, in all THR Emergency Departments alone, there were: 59,771 encounters (or 8% of all ED Admissions) involving any Psychiatric diagnostic mention (not just primary dx) and 141,277 encounters (or 20% of all ED Admissions) involving any Alcohol/Drug diagnostic mention (not just primary dx) = 201,048 combined Psychiatric and Alcohol/Drug Emergency Dept. encounters Inpatient Admission = 1 encounter; outpatient encounters = visits All data is from THR HIM 4

BH Volume Throughout all of THR (all levels of care and programs), primary BH diagnoses: 43% of diagnoses are for Mood (Affective) Disorders 26% are for Mental and behavioral disorders due to psychoactive substance use 16% are for Anxiety, dissociative, stress-related, somatoform and other nonpsychotic disorders And for these primary BH diagnoses 44% of encounters occur in THR Emergency Departments 31% occur on inpatient units 25% occur in outpatient settings 5

Annual Total Calls to / from Call & Transfer Center 2016: 215,109 2017: 254,751 Annual Total Transfer Requests to Transfer Center 2016: 8,973 requests; 5,870 made 2017: 11,404 requests; 8,025 made Mobile Assessment Team Assessed Patients 2016: 8,492 2017: 12,960 The Mobile Assessment Team has now begun using Tele-Behavioral Health assessments to reduce wait time

Top BH Diagnoses - 2017 Throughout all of THR and all levels of care:

Residential Treatment Center for Drugs and Alcohol Average Length of Stay varies based on clinical need Building has a total of 80 beds, 70,000 square foot state-of-the art facility Currently accepting adult men and women Plans are to open adolescent unit with the next few months

Dedicated to alcohol and drug addiction recovery with a focus on overall well-being: Yoga and tai chi studios Swimming pool Modern gym Outdoor walking trails How to refer to THRWC: Call THRWC at or the THR Behavioral Health Call Center at to schedule an appointment Structured, Person-Centered Therapy: Educational and process groups Psychiatrist and physicians Recovery specialists led groups Discharge planning groups Nursing education groups Onsite AA/NA meetings Family support group weekly in which we offer support services to current and discharged family members. This is the same night as our alumni meetings, so that family and alumni can come together to the facility but attend separate meetings

Texas Alcohol/Drug Use & Treatment
In An annual average of about 25,000 individuals aged 12 or older (0.11% of all individuals in this age group) had used heroin in the past year An annual average of about 1,305,000 individuals aged 12 or older (6.0% of all individuals in this age group) had an alcohol use disorder in the past year. In a single-day count in 2015, 35,293 individuals in Texas were enrolled in substance use treatment — a decrease from 36,875 individuals in 2011, but an increase from 31,375 individuals in 2012 and 34,704 individuals in 2013. In a single-day count in 2015, 9,833 individuals in Texas were receiving methadone in opioid treatment programs as part of their substance use treatment—an increase from 9,630 individuals in 2011 and 9,581 individuals in 2012, but a decrease from 11,649 individuals in 2013. Texas Alcohol/Drug Treatment
Among individuals in Texas enrolled in substance use treatment in a single-day count in 2015: 45.1% were in treatment for a drug problem only 14.9% were in treatment for an alcohol problem only 40.0% were in treatment for both drug and alcohol problems Source: SAMHSA Texas Behavioral Health Barometer 2017

Texas Mental Health Data & Treatment
In an annual average of about 272,000 adolescents aged (11.5% of all adolescents) had experienced a Major Depressive Episode (MDE) in the past year From 2011 to 2015 an annual average of about 77,000 adolescents with past year MDE received treatment (33.4% of al adolescents with past year MDE); this means 66.6% did not receive treatment From , an annual average of about 678,000 adults aged 18 or older (3.5% of all adults) had serious thoughts of suicide in the past year In , an annual average of about 645,000 adults aged 18 or older (3.3% of all adults) had a Serious Mental Illness in the past year; of these, 38% received treatment and 62% did not In the sixteen county North Texas county region, in 2016*: 420,456 substance abuse visits were provided 620,324 mental health visits were provided 134,999 visits for combined mental health/substance abuse * Source: North Texas Community Health Collaborative, BH Community Needs Assessment, Dr. Sushma Sharma

Projected National BH Inpatient Discharges Volume & Percent Change From 2017
Nationally, by volume and percent change, psychoses will account for 62% of all inpatient discharges followed by Alcohol/Drug Abuse or Dependence at 16% of all discharges Nationally, over the next five years: National inpatient Behavioral Health discharges are projected to grown by 6% for adults and 5% for children and adolescents (data not shown) National outpatient Behavioral Health services are projected to grow by 10% for adults and 8% for children and adolescents (data not shown) Source: Sg2
