3 Development Programme
HEA Fellowships NAP Lite Buddy Groups Depending on your experienced and expertise we have in place training and support to enable you to develop During your time here you will be placed into buddy groups – it is in your buddy group where you should look for support in the first instance – this will form the foundations of the support for you while you are here. In these groups you will peer review on another, have your teaching observations and attend training sessions. This will culminate in you being able to demonstrate your teaching excellence –important for the onset of the teaching excellence framework (GOV) and result in a nationally recognised teaching fellowship.

6 Which fellowship is right for me?
Look at the criteria from the UKPSF Talk to the person next to you to start to capture the evidence that you have already What do you what to have achieved by the end of this year? What can you evidence? In pairs have a quick discussion

7 What is Coaching? What we would like you to practice today is the support you are giving one another in your buddy groups Who has had a mentor or coach that has helped you to learn something? What did they do to help Before we start I think it is important to determine what coaching means for us Take a moment on your own to think of a definition How you would define coaching Now share with the people around you Happy to share - capture

8 What skills do effective coaches require?
Bring in the analogy of tennis I am very interested in tennis – and looking at the top players what do they need in a coach – surely not technique at this stage Yet bringing in someone that challenges your way of thinking, behaving can have a dramatic different Andy Murray – Ivan Ledal

9 What strengths do you bring to the role?
Push pull modes Link to hand out Where do your strengths lie

10 What’s your natural style?
When you are supporting one another – how are you doing this effectively (are these the skills you will be using within your roles) What is your natural style of communication Push pull model of communication – During your teaching there will be times when you need to be directive others when it is helpful to ask questions that raise awareness Downey (2003) Effective coaching: lessons from the coaches' coach

11 Refer back to the list of coaching skills already generated and pull out questioning as a key skill – both teaching and learning Key model devised by John Whitmore Structured approach – grow model developed by John Whitmore – research determine how we help people to learn Work through the model Getting them to clearly define their learning goals What is the reality in

12 It would be very easy for you to get through this year and think where did that go?
So busy focusing on delivery that you don’t focus on your development (not seeing the wood for the trees) We would like you to practice coaching skills to help each other to determine an action plan for the next year Practice Something that you need to do but haven’t done yet Into 3s 1 mentee, 1 observer, 1 mentor Carry out the three roles Look for examples of good questions Outcomes Did it match what you were after? How could it been improved
