1 Area and Perimeter 6th grade math

2 Perimeter: the distance around a figure
What is Perimeter?

3 How Do You Find Perimeter?
To find the perimeter of a figure, whether it is a regular shape (rectangle, triangle, square, parallelogram, trapezoid, etc.) or an irregular shape, you add all of the side lengths together How Do You Find Perimeter?

4 Area: the number of unit squares that can be contained or placed in a 2D shape
Usually expressed as square feet, square inches, etc. What is Area?

5 To find the area of a square, the formula is: A = s2 OR A = (s)(s)

6 To find the area of a rectangle, the formula is A = bh
”b” means base, or the side/edge that the shape sits on ”h” means height, or the distance from the bottom to the top of the shape Area of a Rectangle h b

7 To find the area of a triangle, the formula is A = ½bh OR A = 𝑏ℎ 2
The area of a triangle is half the area of a rectangle or square To find the area of a triangle, the formula is A = ½bh OR A = 𝑏ℎ 2 Area of a Triangle

8 Area of a Parallelogram
To find the area of a parallelogram, we use the same formula that is used for a rectangle, but we have a different way of identifying the height Area of a Parallelogram

9 If you’ve ever seen the Pizza Hut sign, then you’ve seen a trapezoid, but they don’t always look that way To find the area of a trapezoid, we follow this formula A = ½ (b1+b2) h Area of a Trapezoid

10 NOW FOR SOME PRACTICE!!

11 Must be completed by: 04/18/17 – Tuesday
Homework: STAAR Review Sheet Must be completed by: 04/18/17 – Tuesday *You will have homework over area next class*
