Indirect objects answer the question to
or for whom the subject is doing something. Examples: He gives the present to Jacques. Who is receiving the action of giving? He gives Jacques the present. direct object = the present indirect object = Jacques

The indirect object pronoun (IOP) replaces the indirect object noun and goes in front of the conjugated verb. Examples: He gives Jacques the present. He buys me candies. to whom does he give the present? to Jacques indirect object = Jacques for whom does he buy candies? for me indirect object = me

Sometimes the direct object is not stated, but it is implied or understood.
Examples: Her mother writes her every week. She told me. direct object = letter (understood) indirect object = her direct object = it (understood) indirect object = me

To identify the indirect object pronoun, use either of these 2 guidelines: 1. The indirect object tells us where the direct object is going or who it is for. The indirect object answers the question “to what/whom?” or “for what/whom?” the action is being performed. 2.

Indirect Object Pronouns
Singular Plural me [m’] = to me te [t’] = to you (familiar) lui = to him / her nous = to us vous = to you (or sing. formal) leur = to them

In an affirmative statement with one verb, the indirect object pronoun comes before the conjugated verb: Examples: Jean m’achète une bague. Charles t’achète un ours en peluche. John buys me a ring. John buys a ring for me. Charles buys you a teddy bear. Charles buys a teddy bear for you.

Simone lui donne des bonbons. Gilbert nous envoie un cadeau.
Marie leur montre son cahier . Simone gives her some candy. Simone gives some candy to her. Gilbert sends us a gift. Gilbert sends a gift to us. Marie shows them her notebook. Marie shows her notebook to them.
