Chapter 3 Endocrine Responses to Resistance Exercise

Chapter 3 Non-Steroidal Hormones
Hormones travel in the blood to their specific target organs. w Receptors are specific to hormones such that only the correct hormone will "fit" in the correct receptor. w Each cell has 2,000 to 10,000 specific receptors. Steroid Hormones – Originate from the Adrenal Cortex & the Gonads Lipid in nature, diffuse through cell membranes

Chapter 3 Anabolic Steroids
Anabolic – Protein building or Synthesizing Androgenic – Promotion of male characteristics Gynecomastia – Formation of female breasts in males Acromegaly – Formation of new bone growth Testicular Atrophy Hypertrophy of Clitoris
6
Chapter 3 Testosterone – Androgenic – increases with heavy resistance training Secreted by testes of male and adrenal cortex and ovaries of female Most potent hormone on neural changes Diurnal variations Time of day Exercising large muscles Heavy Resistance/Short rests between sets
7
Growth Hormone (GH) Somatotropin– Secreted by the Pituitary Gland –
Increases Lypolysis Decreases Glycolysis Enhances amino acid uptake and helps with hypertrophy of Type I and Type II fibers Enhancements are dependant on load, rest and volume of exercise Stimulates release of IGF from liver and fat.
8
Chapter 3 Insulin-like Growth Factors (IGF) Other Hormones
GH causes the liver to secrete these 8-29 hours after intense exercise (109) May release hormone for own consumption – no external to the cell Other Hormones Cortisol – Help with the catabolism of protein(muscles). Prefer type II muscle fibers (Pg. 111) Increase in resistance training appears to lessen the effect
9
Chapter 3 Catecholamines – Epinephrine & Norepinephrine & Dopamine
These act as motor stimulators Increase force production Increase muscle concentration rate Increase blood flow Increase blood pressure *** Page 112 Natural stimulation of Endocrine ***Note the rest periods on page 113!!!
