1 Colonial Government GOAL :
TO UNDERSTAND HOW…..“Americans began to develop a common national identity among its diverse regional and cultural population based on democratic ideals. The democratic ideals were reflected in government.”

2 Colonial Governments The English monarch had power over all colonies.
Privy Council – set English rules in colonies. Most colonies were allowed to run on their own. Governors: Highest power in each colony.

5 Town Meetings Town Meetings:
Created to provide representative government. Originated in New England Colonies In town meetings people talked about and decided issues of local interest.

6 Colonial Assemblies Assemblies: Created to provide representative government to help make laws and set policy. (Much like: Parliament) Created to provide representative government.

7 Colonial Assemblies Bicameral Legislature: a lawmaking body made up of two houses, or groups.

House of Burgesses : members were elected by colonists to represent towns Important to the development of democracy in the thirteen colonies because it provided an example of a representative form of government
