2. The American Dream 1930
The American Dream is a phrase referring to the freedom that allows all citizens and residents of the United States to pursue their goals in life through hard work and free choice. The phrase's meaning has evolved over the course of American history.

The American Dream is "that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.

3. The Wall Street Crash
When the Wall Street stock market crashed in October 1929, the world economy was plunged into the Great Depression. By the winter of 1932, America was in the depths of the greatest economic depression in its history.
The number of unemployed people reached upwards of 13 million.
Many people lived in primitive conditions close to famine. One New York family moved into a cave in Central Park. In St Louis, more than 1,000 people lived in shacks made from scrap metal and boxes. There were many similar Hoover villes all over America. Between 1 and 2 million people travelled the country desperately looking for work. Signs saying 'No Men Wanted' were displayed all over the country.

4. The Great Depression
What was the main cause of the Great depression in America?
The event of the wall street crash was what the main cause of the depression in America, which ruined the country from 1930 – Many banks and firms went bust and many people lost their life savings. One third of the population of America were unemployed and had a great impact on the country, because of the amount of unemployed most couldn’t pay their rents and their was huge food shortages. Some ended up in settlements called 'Hoover villes' (after the US president of the time, Herbert C Hoover), in shanties made from old packing cases and corrugated iron.

5. Itinerant (migrant) farm workers (in 1930s America)
Itinerant workers were people who moved around the country looking for work. A lot of people were itinerant workers during the great depression due to the mass unemployment.
Most worked on ranches whilst moving from place to place to find work, so many slept on/in the ranch or in camps. Most of their work came from agriculture so farms were often their place of rest.
Because of the Great Depression, many people migrated to New York in search of work, but more often to California which was known as the 'sunshine state'. People hoped this would bring them jobs and happiness. These Itinerant workers were more often than not Mexican.
