Chapter 5 lesson 1 Objective: Describe the signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Main Idea: Anxiety and depression are two of the most common mental health problems. Both are treatable.

Coping with Anxiety - The condition of feeling uneasy or worried about what may happen. (+) Stress management skills (i.e.…exercise, music, art) (-) Drugs, alcohol, or tobacco products….because they are a false sense of relaxation and only provide temporary relief.

5 Depression Is a prolonged feeling of helplessness, hopelessness, and sadness. Depression can be caused by: Physiological Reasons (heredity) Psychological Reasons (traumatic event) Social Reasons (living in poverty)

6 3 Types of Depression Major Depression - Intense & last for weeks or months. Mild Depression – Low intensity & can last for years. Adjustment disorder – reaction to a specific life event. (person having trouble reaching closure when grieving)

7 Signs of Depression Persistent sad or irritable mood
Difficulty sleeping or oversleeping Change in weight or appetite Withdrawal from family & friends Speaking/moving with unusual slowness Loss of interest or pleasure of activities Feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt Feelings of hopelessness & desperation Difficulty concentrating, slowed thinking, or indecisiveness Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide

8 Other Indications of Depression:
Extreme anxiety, agitation or enraged behavior Excessive drug or alcohol use or abuse Neglect of physical health

Medication Changes in home or school environment Counseling

10 ACTIVITY Complete the worksheet “Is this individual experiencing normal or excessive anxiety? 1. On back of paper number 1-6 and list if anxiety is normal or excessive. 2. Explain how you could tell 1-6 were normal or excessive.
