1 Science Starter Brains are cool… During yesterday’s lab, most people found the auditory reaction time to be the fastest. Why do you think this is the case? Starting with the term Nervous System, break down the term into as many categories as possible (CNS/PNS) How many neurons do you think make up the brain? How fast do you think a neuron conducts a message? 100 billion, can fire over 200 signals per second

2 Today’s Agenda Science Starter Nervous System Basics Neuron Stations
Exit Quiz

3 Nervous System Fragility – No Reflexes??
The inability for a body to feel pain: Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis (CIPA) -girl-who-cant-feel-pain/

4 Unit 3: The Nervous System
Lesson 1: The Neuron

5 I. Basic Divisions of the Nervous System
Central Nervous System (CNS): brain and spinal cord. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): nerves of the body                    -- Includes 31 pairs of spinal nerves                    -- And  12 pairs of cranial nerves

6 I. Basic Divisions of the Nervous System
Figure 12.2

7 II. THREE BASIC FUNCTIONS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
Sensory -  gathers info Integrative - information is brought together Motor - responds to signals, homeostasis

8 III. Motor Functions Somatic Nervous System - skeletal (voluntary)
Autonomic Nervous System -  smooth muscles, glands (involuntary)

9 IV. The Neuron: Communication
Neurons = masses of nerve cells that transmit information 1. Cell Body (soma)- contains the nucleus 2. Dendrites – shorter, more numerous, receive information 3. Axons – single, long “fiber” which conducts impulse away from the cell body, sends information

10 1. Dendrites - receive information
2. Axons - conducts impulses

11 Neuron Stations There are 3 stations: 3D Neuron Model
Neuron Diagram & Questions Synapse Animation At each station there are different directions to follow, you make write your answers to questions on the paper provided at each station You will have 15 minutes at each station, so make sure you work quickly!

12 Exit Quiz 1. The part of a neuron that conducts impulses away from its cell body is called a(n) A. Schwann cell B. dendrite C. axon D. Neurolemma 2. Which part of the peripheral nervous system responds to stressful situations? A. autonomic nervous system B. parasympathetic nervous system C. sympathetic nervous system D. central nervous system 3. The brain of the frog is destroyed. A piece of acid-soaked paper is applied to the frog's skin. Every time the piece of paper is placed on its skin, one leg moves upward. Which of the following conclusions is best supported by the experiment? A. reflex actions are not automatic B. some reflex actions can be inhibited or facilitated C. all behaviors in frogs are primarily reflex responses D. this reflex action bypasses the brain
