FSA Measuring Up to ... 4TH Grade Family Night Bob Graham Education Center

2 The way mathematics is being taught in Florida is changing
With the adoption of the new Florida Standards for mathematics, students will be focusing on critical areas including the following: Building foundational skills, like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals AND Understanding the concepts of mathematics more deeply. (We want to move our children beyond procedural skill and into conceptual understanding) Building skills and problem-solving abilities, and applying mathematics to the real world. (By thinking and reasoning “mathematically,” our students can practice applying mathematics to the real world.) Overview

3 Handout These documents where included in WB Briefing ID #: 16794
in 3 different languages please distribute as applicable. Handout

4 Grade 4 Materials: Length of Ants Line Plot sheet Pencil
Distribute materials, one per family. Discuss the fact that in grade 4, students will learn: how to make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8); solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection. Direct groups to begin the activity, starting with step 1, reviewing the data on the table. Step 2 requires the student to create a line plot. Step 3, encourage the student to explain their response to their parent/guardian who can then provide feedback.

5 Grade 4 Ask further questions about the data:
Which ants have the same lengths? What are the lengths? [1) Ant 1 and 7 are 1/8 in; 2) Ant 6 and 10 are 2/8 in.; 3) Ant 2, 8, and 9, are 3/8 in.; 4) Ant 5 and 11 are 1 in.] Which ants together will have a total of ½ inch? [Ant 6 and 10; Ant 1 with 2, 8, or 9; Ant 7 with Ant 2, 8, or 9; Ant 1, 7 and 6; Ant 1, 7, and 10] Which ants together will have a length of 1 inch? [look for those whose fractions sum is 1- for example, Ants 6, 10, 1, and 2] 4. If an Ant can have a clone(s), which Ant and how many of its clones will together be 1 inch? [various; example, Ant 6 and 3 clones, since Ant 6 is 2/8 in. and 3 more of the same ant would be 6/8 in., for a total of 8/8 in. = 1 in.]

7 TESTING DATES Writing Monday March 2nd Reading
Monday March 16th and Tuesday March 17th (BEFORE SPRING BREAK) Math Wednesday April 1st and Thursday April 2nd (AFTER SPRING BREAK)

8 ATTENDANCE DAILY IS VERY IMPORTANT
Please schedule all doctor appointments after school or on weekends until after testing.

9 MATH RESOURCES Think Central (students must enter through their student portal) i-Ready ixl (teacher discretion) Reflex Math (teacher discretion)

10 We understand your frustration!!!
This slide provides a quick reference of where the activities can be found and that they address the foundation skills of the measurement and data concepts that will be taught in quarter 3. Feel free to hide slides that will not be used during a grade-level specific presentation.
