2. Outcome of the WWI
Around 8 million soldiers and 22 million civilians had been killed
The cost of the war was roughly nine billion pounds (British Money)
The destruction of land, homes, farms and factories was huge
Millions more people died after the war due to famine and disease
In 1919, Germany was forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles

3. The Terms of the Treaty
War Guilt Clause- Germany had to accept total responsibility for starting the First World War.
Financial Clause- Germany had to pay 33 Billion in reparations to cover war damages and other Allied losses.

4. Terms of the Treaty Territorial Clause-
Germany had to hand over some 1 million square miles of land (about 13% of Germany’s land).
6 million of people who lived there AND Much of this land was rich in natural resources.
Germany’s colonies were taken away. These colonies were run by the Allies.

5. Terms of the Treaty
Military Clause- The German army was to have no more than 100,000 men and the navy was limited to 15,000 sailors.
NO Air force and NO submarines.
The German navy was allowed 6 battleships
Could NOT buy any more weapons and other war material.
***An Allied Army was to occupy the Rhineland for a period of fifteen years.

Germans greatly resented the restrictions put on it by the Treaty of Versailles.
Germans began to rise up in protest
Economic conditions worsened.
Germany also became isolated from and distrusted by other countries.
