Indicator 4.3 states the system maintains facilities, services and equipment to provide a safe, clean, and healthy environment for all students and staff. Our department employees are held accountable for their actions ensuring this level is maintained. Some of the areas we monitor are:

3 Annual State Police Inspection
State Police Bus Inspection – each year our buses are inspected by the Indiana State Police. Prior to the inspection date our buses are thoroughly cleaned inside and out by the drivers. Our mechanics check all components of the bus. On inspection day, the Indiana State Police thoroughly check the bus in it’s entirety to make sure it is structurally and mechanically sound for our students.

The results of our inspection are posted for public review on the state police website.

5 Results for our State Police District
The Indiana State Police track bus records by the number that pass inspection the first pass through the line. We increased the number of buses that passed inspection first time through by 10%. In 2013 we had 85% of buses pass 1st time through, in % of our buses passed 1st time through. Our goal in 2015 is 100%.

6 League Schools Here are the results with our league schools

7 Held twice a year – once each semester
Bus evacuation drills Held twice a year – once each semester Within 45 school days of the start of the semester One drill held without driver involvement Completed within 2 minutes Completion reported to the State of Indiana Bus evacuation drills are state mandated just like fire drills. Drivers are required to instruct their students about bus evacuation safety every week. Field trip drivers are required to give bus evacuation instructions every time they take a new class or team out on a field trip.

8 Special need students are not required to participate in the drills
Special need students are not required to participate in the drills. In order to provide safety for special need students, all drivers are required to fill out this form so emergency personnel will know where each child sits. We have forms for each of our three different size special need buses.

9 I am very interested in the emotional safety of our students
I am very interested in the emotional safety of our students. Our drivers foster a secure and safe environment by encouraging students to report any problems they may have. Bullying is addressed as soon as it is reported to the driver. The drivers and my self will call parents to discuss any problems we may be having. Drivers write up the students and provide as much detail as possible to the principals who handle the discipline of the perpetrator.

10 TECHNOLOGY Another way we are able to help our students feel more secure is through our digital camera system that is installed on our buses. Our newest buses have 5 cameras inside and one shield camera that allows us to view the road as the driver does. The camera faces out of the front windshield. All of our buses will be equipped with digital shield cameras by the end of This technology helps us keep our students safe by allowing the driver to view the digital pictures when a student has a concern.

11 Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Training
This program, considered the worldwide standard for crisis prevention and intervention training, can help your organization: Reduce the risk of injury. Comply with legislative mandates. Meet regulatory/accreditation standards. Improve staff retention. Minimize exposure to liability. Promote the philosophy of Care, Welfare, Safety, and SecuritySM Our nonviolent crisis intervention training is another method our drivers use to calm students who are unusually upset. This training enables the driver to de-escalating threatening situations safety. This training concentrates on the way we talk, listen and relate to students.

13 We monitor our students to ensure students get off at the right stop
We monitor our students to ensure students get off at the right stop. Drivers are provided route sheets that list student names at their stop. If a student needs to ride a different bus, parents are required to call transportation to arrange the change. Schools are not allowed to issue bus passes without speaking to our department first. Students are not allowed to change bus stops without approval from our office personnel. If a driver wishes to add a stop, it must be cleared by myself first and the driver is required to provide logic behind the change. Weather is monitored daily for any changes that could affect the safety of our students. Road construction can prove to be challenging for our drivers. Communication with myself and the local government entities help us avoid most problems. Parents are notified when the buses will be delayed due to construction or other road hazards.

14 All of our driver’s belong to a drug pool
All of our driver’s belong to a drug pool. Random testing is conducted four times a year. The program is administered by Midwest Toxicology Services and the Indiana State Police audit the program once a year. We have never failed a drug audit to date.
