What might we be learning about today?
FACT: It is estimated that within 100 years there will be no rainforests. What might we be learning about today?
2
What are the consequences of deforestation?
Learning Objectives To describe a method of deforestation To explain some of the advantages and disadvantages of deforestation To make suggestions on how deforestation could be more sustainable
3
Slash and burn process.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubzTJhbsWFI
This is a process of clearing the rainforests for agriculture (farming).
4
What is slash and burn?- put these statements in order
The plot of land is burned to remove vegetation, drive away pests, and provide a burst of nutrients for planting. Prepare the field by cutting down vegetation; plants that provide food or timber may be left standing. Planting is done directly in the ashes left after the burn. The downed vegetation is allowed to dry until just before the rainiest part of the year to ensure an effective burn.

Copy into your books: Slash and burn process
1. Prepare the field by cutting down vegetation; plants that provide food or timber may be left standing. 2. The plot of land is burned to remove vegetation, drive away pests, and provide a burst of nutrients for planting. 4. Planting is done directly in the ashes left after the burn.

Consequences of Deforestation
Chemicals from mining poison rivers Plants and animals killed Soils ruined Consequences of Deforestation Land spoilt Tribal people killed by murder and disease Global Warming – fewer trees to take in CO2 Medicines and cures for diseases lost
7
Why might deforestation be a good thing for Brazil?
8
Pay back debts. Provide homes. Make money.
Improve Brazils Development. Pay back debts. Positive reasons for rainforest destruction. Provide homes. Make money.

What can you answer? Answer the question which is levelled at your target grade. If you feel like a challenge attempt the next question!! Band 4: Describe 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of deforestation Band 5: What do you think are the main reasons why Brazil continue doing deforestation? What do you think is the worst consequence of this? Band 6: Which is the main consequence and the main reason for deforestation? Explain why you think this Band 7: Do you think the positive impacts of deforestation outweigh the negative impacts? Explain why using examples
10
With the person next to you come up with 2 ideas
How can we make deforestation more sustainable? (less damaging to the world in the long run) With the person next to you come up with 2 ideas
11
Saving the Rainforests
Selective Logging – only cut down trees needed Create National Parks Replanting Buy or sponsor land Saving the Rainforests Slow down population growth Recycle products e.g. paper and wood Improve security Give Aid / Money Write to MP
12
Sustainable deforestation
List the ideas on the board (and ones of your own) in order of importance. Put what you think is the best solution at the top, and the worst at the bottom Explain your options for the best and the worst solutions
