Chapter R – A Review of Basic Concepts and Skills
Section 3 – Exponents, Scientific Notation, and a Review of Polynomials
2
The Properties of Exponents
3
Scientific Notation In applications, we encounter numbers that are extremely large or small. When computing with numbers this size, scientific notation is used. A non-zero number written in scientific notation has the form N x 10k where |N| is between 1 and 10 and k is an integer
4
Identifying and Classifying Polynomial Expressions
Monomial: one term, no variables in the denominator Degree of a monomial – sum of exponents on factors Polynomial: monomial or sum/difference of monomial terms Degree of a polynomial – highest degree term Binomial: polynomail with two terms Trinomial: polynomial with three terms
5
Classify the Polynomials
6
Adding/Subtracting Polynomials
(0.7n3 + 4n2 + 8)+(0.5n3 – n2 – 6n)-(3n2 +7n-10)
7
Multiplying Polynomials
3x ( 4x + 2y ) ( x + 2 )( x + 1 ) ( x + 5 )( x2 – 2x + 3 )
8
Special Polynomial Products
Product of a Binomial and its Conjugate (a+b)(a-b)=a2 – b2 Square of a Binomial (a+b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2 (a-b)2 = a2 - 2ab + b2
