Lines When speaking about poetry we refer to each row of words as lines—not as sentences.

Stanzas When we talk about a group of lines in a poem we refer to them as a stanza—not a paragraph.

Speaker The voice that is “talking” to the reader in a poem is known as a speaker—not a narrator.

Poetry Vocabulary Repetition: the use of a word, phrase, line, or sound more than once. Alliteration: the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words. Assonance: the repetition of vowel sounds in words that don’t end with the same consonant.

Poetry Vocabulary Rhyme Scheme: is the pattern that the end-rhyming words follow. To identify rhyme scheme, circle each rhyming word and assign it a letter. Each word that rhymes gets the same letter. When you move to another stanza, continue with the next letters of the alphabet. A A B A C C D C
