Feudalism Develops
In response to waves of invasions, a new political structure called feudalism emerged in Europe in the Middle Ages. Feudalism was based on the exchange of land for loyalty, as a vassal served a lord in battle in return for a fief and its peasants.

The World of Knights and Nobles
Warfare was a way of life for medieval nobles, who were often sent as children to train to be knights. Noblewomen were also trained for their duties as household managers and mothers. In times of war, nobles, knights, and peasants all took refuge within the same castle walls.

Manors Support Feudalism
Manors often included one or more villages and the surrounding lands, along with the peasants who lived on and worked the land. Peasants farmed the lord’s lands, repaired his property, and paid him fees. They also farmed several acres for themselves.
