Amazing statement in gospel of John about discipleship.
Made by Jesus the next morning after He fed the 5,000 men, plus women and children.
Unusual statement that resulted in most of Jesus’ followers leaving Him.
Found in John 6:53-54

3. John 6:53-54
“So Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

As with the entire Bible, Jesus is present in the book of Exodus in many ways.

5. Jesus: The Bread From Heaven
John 6:32-33, 35 – “Jesus then said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world’….Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.’”

6. Jesus The True Bread
Reference was to Exodus 16 and the sending of manna (what is it?) from heaven.
Began with grumbling of the people
Exodus 16:3 – “The sons of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat, when we ate bread to the full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

7. Bread With Specific Instructions
Exodus 16:4 --Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether or not they will walk in My instruction.”

8. Covering of Quail and Dew of Manna
God blessed them even though they were grumbling and complaining.
Described as:
Exodus 16:15 – “When the sons of Israel saw it, they said to one another, ‘What is it?’ For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, ‘It is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat.’”
Numbers 21:5 --The people spoke against God and Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this miserable food.”

9. Jesus Is That Manna We “eat” Jesus by faith/obedience
John 6:33, 48, 51 – “For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world…. I am the bread of life…. I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.”

10. Jesus: The Drink From Heaven
John 6:35, Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst…. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink.

11. A Specific Rock and Instructions
Exodus 17:3,6 – “But the people thirsted there for water; and they grumbled against Moses and said, ‘Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?... ‘Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.’ And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.”

12. Isaiah 8:13-14
“It is the Lord of hosts whom you should regard as holy. And He shall be your fear, and He shall be your dread. Then He shall become a sanctuary; but to both the houses of Israel, a stone to strike and a rock to stumble over, and a snare and a trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.”
NASB: Stone to strike? Meaning of the word is to stumble or trip, or be diseased.
Jesus becomes the Stumble Stone and the Ruin Rock.

13. Water From The Rock
Numbers 20:8 – “Take the rod; and you and your brother Aaron assemble the congregation and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it may yield its water. You shall thus bring forth water for them out of the rock and let the congregation and their beasts drink.”

14. Jesus as Water
John 7:37-39 – “Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”
Not a direct quote, but a quote of substance.

15. Jesus As The Water Rock
1 Corinthians 10:4 – “…and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.”
Rock didn’t literally follow them
Christ DID literally follow them

16. Jesus As The Passover Passover instituted in Exodus 12
Constituted a meal to be eaten in haste – spoke of bondage and redemption.
Male yearling lamb with no blemishes
Roasted over fire only
Entrails intact
No leftovers

17. Idea Behind Passover Sacrifice of an innocent victim
Suffering and trial to be relieved
Forgiveness by God
Bitterness of captivity leading to joy of deliverance
Faith and trust in God.

18. Christ Our Passover
1 Corinthians 5:7 – “Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.”
