Mandarin at MVC How Mandarin was set up at MVC.
From Sep 2016, Mandarin was offered to all Year 7 students with the same amount of curriculum time. MVC is the only state secondary school in Cambridgeshire to offer Mandarin as part of the curriculum. From Sep 2017, MVC was qualified to join in Mandarin Excellence Program.

The voice from students
Ben Woodrow (Year 8) I have really enjoyed learning Mandarin this year. Every lesson is extremely fun. It is more difficult to learn than other languages, partly because there are two separate things to remember for each word: how to write it and how to say it. If someone had told me at the start of year seven that I would learn as much as I have, I would not have believed them. Samuel Bream (Year 8): I have really enjoyed Mandarin this year. My favorite part of Mandarin is the characters because all the parts sit together like a puzzle. My favorite word is 玩电脑游戏 because it is challenging to remember. Nikita Bridgeman (Year 8): I like learning Mandarin because I love learning new languages and challenging myself. Skye Pearson(Year 8): I like learning Mandarin because I like knowing a different language and being able to speak it. Millie Coventon (Year 8): I like learning Mandarin because it is fun and it impresses people who can’t speak it!

Grace B-H (Year 7): I think you should do Mandarin because it is a fantastic language to learn. Chinese is challenging but it is extremely good fun. For me Mandarin is my favourite subject. I love to speak it and write the characters. Rebecca Frisby (Year 7): I like learning Mandarin because it is interesting and I love learning a new language. Mr Fan makes learning Mandarin more fun and enjoyable. Amelie Royapen (Year 7): I like learning Mandarin because it gives you lots of opportunities when you are older and I think that it is good to learn another language

Strategies of developing own teaching style—Let them do it
I trained a few high ability Year 8 students how to use the marking scheme to do the speaking test. Those trained students were delegated to test the rest of the class. By the end of the KS3, my aim is the students can test each other by using marking scheme. It will reduce the amount of my time to do the speaking test. It also helps students to understand how to improve their speaking skills.

Reading Comprehension
It is a great achievement for students to read a Chinese paragraph and give the answers in English because their parents can’t do it! Reading Chinese paragraph loudly with the tone is a fun activity for students. It will help students to understand Chinese grammar by breaking down the sentences. It will help students to build up their Mandarin writing skills.
