WWI Causes: Imperialism, Nationalism, Militarism, Secret Alliances Total War: ALL resources going toward war Sides: Allies vs. Central powers Russia, France, Britain VS Germany, Austria, Italy Turning Point = US entering the war in 1917 Reds (Vladimir Lenin; Bolsheviks) VS Whites (army leaders) Paris Peace Conference = Mandate system Czech & Yugo = new independent nations US = best economic shape (Roaring Twenties) Balfour Declaration – British supported Israel (Jewish State) Conflict = BOTH groups claim the same homeland

Long March = Communists attempt at peasant support Japan- Growing industrialization and Democracy Latin America- Military dictators holding most of the power. 1920s – Roaring Twenties Apartheid = official policy in South Africa

1930s Great Depression hits the world:
Causes: Overproduction, deflation, and falling demand. Manchuria = taken over by Japan because they need resources Fascism = total government control that is NOT communism Implemented by Germany and Italy Spanish Civil War between Fascism and Communism India--Gandhi resists British colonization through nonviolent protest Italy, Japan, and Germany become the axis powers (1936)

Germany annexes its neighbors Beginning of WWII: Germany invades Poland (1939) Soviets break pact with Germans when Germany invaded them Allies: Britain, France, Soviet Union; Axis: Italy, Germany, Japan Italy takes over N. Africa Japan-Raping of Nanjing German Nazis- Their goals-unite and purify their country- Final Solution (Holocaust).

Turning point in the war: D-Day invasion The Big Three start to plan for the end: Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill Japan refuses to surrender-atomic bomb is dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima (1945) Nuremburg Trials Divide Germany into 4 zones-becomes West Germany (democracy) vs. East Germany (communism) Eastern Europe takes on dictatorship-sympathize with USSR
