Overview: Polonius gives money to his manservant, Reynaldo, to travel to Paris to “spy” on his son, Laertes. Is he’s being naughty?!? Reynaldo will question friends & acquaintances of Laertes & observe him. Question #1: Make a list of things Polonius seems concerned about Laertes doing- what are the “naughties”? Question #2: Make a list of things which Hamlet did which frightened Ophelia: Question #3: In a sentence, sum up Polonius’s explanation for Hamlet’s odd behavior after talking to his daughter: Discuss: Is it okay for Hamlet to fool Ophelia into thinking he’s gone mad?

Overview: The King & Queen make a request of Hamlet’s “friends”: find Hamlet, observe & talk with him [spy!], and come up with a reason for his odd behavior lately. Question #4: Sum up the reaction of Hamlet’s former friends to the plan of the King and Queen in a single sentence. Plot #3! How do you feel about Hamlet’s friends’ willingness to spy upon him?

Overview: Hamlet decides to have a visiting group of actors modify a play [ “The Murder of Gonzago”] to mimic the murder of King Hamlet as described by the Ghost. He will call it “The Mouse Trap.” Question #7: Hamlet is hesitating to kill King Claudius- why? How will this little “play” help him decide what to do? Explain: Plot #5: Hamlet’s!

Overview: Hamlet tells Horatio that no matter how oddly he might act in the coming days, Horatio is NOT to give away the fact that Hamlet suspects Claudius of killing King Hamlet OR that any of them have seen King Hamlet’s ghost. His behavior is meant throw people off-balance as he searches for the truth. Question #8: SO: Is Hamlet pretending madness in Act 2 or is he really going mad?
