Battle of Ypres Ansen Tan : Kenneth Ruslim : Samyak Sawale : Lifan Zeng

2 Background Happened during 1914–1917 in Ypres, Belgium
Consisted of three main battles, starting with Germany invading Belgium. The war was a constant stalemate Approximately 260,000 German casualties and over 300,000 British casualties

3

4 The First Battle (October 14th, 1914)
Background Germans stopped on their conquest west during their execution of the Schlieffen Plan. Erich Von Falkenhayn, the German Chief General, lead his army of poorly trained soldiers against the Allied forces of Sir John French Became the start of the trench warfare stalemate at the Western Front of Germany vs. France, Britain and Belgium Leaders Erich Von Falkenhayn (German Chief General) Sir John French (Commander of British Expeditionary Force)

5 The Second Battle (April 22, 1915)
Background Germany was on the offensive and were the first to use chlorine gas in an attempt to break the stalemate. Falkenhayn tried to capitalize off their advantage, but they were suppressed by Commander Horace Smith-Dorrien Germans were able to push the British back; however, they failed to break through. Leaders Horace Smith-Dorrien (British Second Army Commander)

6 The Third Battle (Summer of 1917)
Background Was fought with little flexibility in the tactics used to break the stalemates, which lead to many casualties Allied forces mobilized quicker than the Germans expected Germany and Allied forces were at a stalemate until Gen. Herbert Plumer lead the Canadian brigades that destroyed Germany and ended the battle. Leaders General Herbert Plumer (Replaced Smith-Dorrien)

7 WINNERS Germany was considered the winner of the first two battles
The third victory went to the Allied forces because they were able to prevent Germany from expanding west. Germany did not recede from the warfront, they only diverted attention back to Russia in the east. Germany had a lot more people who were not trained. Britain's highly effective trained soldiers trashed the Germans. Germany kept sending people to the British side, but the British would hold them off causing a stalemate.

8 EUROPEAN/GLOBAL IMPACT
Ypres was a major turning point in World War I Before the Battle of Ypres, German forces were dominating on their conquest west. Germany attempted to exterminate French by capturing the stronghold of Paris. The sudden stop of German forces by Allies gave hope and a “foothold” in Europe for the allies. Helped spread German conflict over the entirety of Europe.
