WHAT IS STEALTH TECHNOLOGY ?
Stealth is a technique of making an object invisible. Stealth is an important technology used in military operations. Stealth is also known as LO(low observable) technology
4
EVOLUTION From earliest days deception has been used to gain advantage over the enemy. Early combat aircraft in WW- I used camouflage to make visual detection difficult. Advent RADAR in late 1930’s and during WW-II enabled early detection of aircraft . In 1940’s a unique way with low RADAR cross section strategic bombers developed. In late 50’s and 60’s came LO planes with compromised performance .
6
STEALTH CHARACTERISTICS
Airframe shaped for low radar cross section. Use of radar absorbent materials(RAM). Minimized infrared signature. Reduced engine noise. Reduced visual signature.

DESIGN PROCESS
8
RADAR CROSS SECTION RCS of a target is a measure of its size as seen by the radar. It’s a complex function of the geometric cross section of the target. RCS is a characteristics of the target not the radar.
9
RCS of a metal plate Large RCS but decreases rapidly as the incident angle deviates from the normal
10
RCS of metal sphere Small RCS but independent of the incident angle.
11
Aircraft high RCS area
12
Designed low observability areas
13
Comparative RCS
14
Radar Absorbing Material(RAM)
Nanostructural composite materials absorbing radar waves without reflecting. RAM reduces the radar cross section making the object appear smaller.
15
The other techniques are
Active cancellation Passive cancellation Plasma stealth
16
DRAWBACKS Poor aerodynamic properties.
Requires high end electronic instruments and software's. High maintenance cost. Limited amount of ordnance.
17
Counter Stealth Technology
Obtain stronger RADAR returns employing sophisticated algorithm. VHF and UHF radars High frequency over the horizon radars(OTHRs). BI-static and multi-static radar technology.
18
APPLICATIONS Used in wind farms. Civil aviation and launch vehicles
