Science Starter Water Turbine inside of a Dam
During our introduction to cells Mr. Houtz spoke about the bodies tendency to create “molecular machines” that mimic the machines humans create. The two pictures here are very similar, one is man made and the other is made by cells. Can you guess which organelle that we have learned about this week is shown in the second picture? What is this??

Identify the Major Tissue Types in the Human Body
Objective 2.2 Identify the Major Tissue Types in the Human Body
4
Tissues
5
Epithelial Tissue - Covers all body surfaces both inside and out. - Main glandular (glands) tissue. - Usually has no vascular tissue - blood supply - Cells reproduce rapidly (rapid healing). - Cells tightly packed together If a girl weighs 100 pounds. How much of her weight is skin?
6
Where does all the dead skin you shed go?
It takes about 27 days for the outer layer of skin to shed and be replaced; that works out to 1.5 pounds of skin cells per year. Where does all the dead skin you shed go?
7
Connective Tissue -Most abundant tissue in your body -Binds structures together -Provides support, protection, framework, fills space, stores fat, produces blood cells, fights infection -Composed of more scattered cells within matrix -Made up of a ground substance (fluid, semi-solid) and fibers -Good blood supply -Cells can reproduce
8
Types of Cells in Connective Tissue
Mast cells (prevents clots) Macrophages (consumers) Fibroblasts (produce fibers) Collagenous (bones, ligaments, tendons) Elastic (respiratory)
9
Adipose Tissue (fat) Loose connective tissue composed mostly of adipocytes
10
Muscle Tissue Muscle tissue is a soft tissue that composes muscles in animal bodies Gives rise to muscles' ability to contract.
11
Nerve Tissue Nervous tissue is the main component of the two parts of the nervous system The central nervous system (CNS): brain and spine The branching peripheral nerves of the peripheral nervous system (PNS): regulates and controls bodily functions and activity.

Tissues eLab Everybody needs to find a partner in the room
Once you have a partner, you can grab a laptop and login When everyone is logged in, turn your computer to face the front and I will give the rest of the directions
13
Tissues Worksheet Use your notes from the Tissue eLab to complete the tissue worksheet Highlighted problems do not need to be answered You can put your answers on the worksheet! I will be checking this on TUESDAY! ** Need more help? Pgs in the textbook!**

Exit Quiz What 2 types of tissue are likely to have cells that support passive diffusion? This tissue plays an important part in supporting the mucous membranes, blood vessels, and skin. It contains many types of cells Which types of tissues are likely to have “gap junctions” to send signals back and forth? Which tissue type is likely to have the greatest number of mitochondria present? 1. Simple squamous, stratified squamous 2. Areolar tissue 3. Nervous, Muscular (cardiac) 4. Muscular
