Create a list of the life lessons you have learned. Tomorrow you will choose one to write your Personal Narrative. Importance of keeping promises. Respect your elders. Be happy with what you have. Hard work pays off. Think twice before you act. Do not blame others. Always speak the truth. Do what is right, even when you’re afraid. Treat others as you want to be treated. Always strive to do your best. Patience gives you the advantage. Never give up! Pass it on. Learn to enjoy the journey. Don’t seek revenge, seek peace. Be willing to compromise for the greater good. Accept the differences among people. Do no harm. Value life. Open your mind to alternative points of view. Be willing to serve. Do everything in the spirit of love. Strive to constantly improve. Be faithful in your values, promises, vows.

Body 1 Detail 1 – People wondered about Vingo. Detail 2 – The girl sat beside Vingo and talked to him and learned he lived in Jacksonville and was in the Navy. Detail 3 – The girl offered him some wine and didn’t question him any further.

Body 2 Detail 1 – The next morning (Howard Johnson’s) the girl insisted Vingo join them for breakfast. He did. Detail 2 – Back on the bus, the girl sat beside Vingo again and he “…slowly and painfully and with great hesitation, he began to tell his story.” Detail 3 – Learned that Vingo might be married, was in prison for 4 years, and that he is headed to see if she tied a yellow ribbon around the tree in Brunswick to say he can come home.

Body 3 Detail 1 – The girl told the others. Vingo’s family picture was shared. They were intrigued and wanted things to work out for Vinglo Detail 2 – When the bus was 20 miles from Brunswick Vingo could not look up any longer. The bus “had a dark hushed mood, full of silence, of absence, of lost years…” Detail 3 – The yellow handkerchiefs were spotted. The bus celebrated! Vingo stayed quiet.

Conclusion – Vingo sat stunned, tree covered in yellow handkerchiefs, “the old con slowly rose from his seat, holding himself tightly, and made his way to the front of the bus to go home. The moral of the story is not directly stated, it is implied. “Never give up.” “Don’t lose hope.” “Patience pays off.”

10 Creating Your Personal Narrative
Use the “Outlining Your Narrative” graphic organizer to plan your personal narrative. You will turn in a rough draft and a final draft. You will be graded on the items outlined in the graphic organizer. Your final version must be typed, double- spaced, Times New Romans size 12 font. Type your heading at the top of the page: Name Date Hopkins - Personal Narrative
