6 Base Umpire Positioning
Where to go when ball is hit Single most important tip to learn ….. Ball is in the infield – You’re out of the infield, Ball is out – You’re in the working area If a hit ball stays in the infield and is fielded by an infielder, BU stays outside and makes call from shallow outfield or in the dirt (always in FAIR territory) If a hit ball gets through to the outfield (either on a fly ball or ground ball), BU busts inside, turns to watch runners tag first and follows runner and ball to the play. BU should be set ahead of arriving runner. Only way to keep up with the runners and be in position for the play is to HUSTLE Helps you stay out of the way of the ball coming in Know where the ball is; let it take you to the next play

7 Umpire Positioning Learn “The Wedge”
Get in a position where you can see the entire play Anticipate where the play may take you, but don’t get blocked out A play can turn from an easy play to a difficult play in an instance, especially in the case of a tag Get as close as you can to a play, but make sure you don’t interfere with the play

8 No Runners on Base BU – starts in A (~10 feet behind 1B and in Foul territory) Coverage - All plays at all bases All touches at 1B and 2B OBS/INT at all bases PU – positioned behind the plate Coverage - Fair/Foul All Catch/No Catch All touches at 3B and Home Plays at the plate OBS/INT at the plate Help with pulled foot at 1B; dropped ball if asked by BU

9 Runner on 1B Only BU – starts in B (about 8-10 feet behind and towards the 2nd base side of the 2nd baseman) Coverage - All plays at all bases Touches by all runners at 1st and 2nd OBS/INT at all bases Retouches and tag ups at 1st Leaving early PU – positioned behind the plate Coverage - Fair/Foul Catch/No Catch Plays at the plate OBS/INT at the plate Touches at 3rd and Home

10 Any Runner 2B or 3B BU – starts in C (about 5-10 feet behind the shortstop on 2B side of SS) Coverage - All plays at all bases Touches by all runners at 1st and 2nd OBS/INT at all bases Retouches and tag ups at 1st and 2nd Leaving early at all bases PU – positioned behind home plate Coverage - Fair/Foul Catch/No Catch Plays at the plate OBS/INT at the plate Touches at 3rd and Home Retouches and tag ups at 3rd

11 Other Communicate with your partner before every batter! Signal number of outs Signal Play (like IFF) If for some reason, you’re the only umpire working the game: You have all calls at the plate and all bases and all catches over the entire field! Extra hustle will be needed.
