Chromosome Counting!
2
What are chromosomes? Double rods of condensed chromatin
Chromatin is the material in cells that contains DNA and carries genetic information (the blueprint of the organism)
4
Chromosomes Numbers All plants and animals have a certain number of chromosomes in their body cells called the diploid (or 2n) number.
5
Lets try some examples!
6
Zea mays (corn or maize) has 20 chromosomes
How many chromosomes does the parent cell normally have? How many chromosomes does the parent cell have right before it divides? How many chromosomes does each of the daughter cells have after cell division?
7
Mus musculus (house mouse) has 40 chromosomes
How many chromosomes does the parent cell normally have? How many chromosomes does the parent cell have right before it divides? How many chromosomes does each of the daughter cells have after cell division?
8
Cambarus clarkii (a crayfish) has 200 chromosomes
How many chromosomes does the parent cell normally have? How many chromosomes does the parent cell have right before it divides? How many chromosomes does each of the daughter cells have after cell division?
9
Vampires (like Edward) have 50 chromosomes
How many chromosomes does the parent cell normally have? How many chromosomes does the parent cell have right before it divides? How many chromosomes does each of the daughter cells have after cell division?
