kin group People who view themselves as relatives, who share a common identity based on their kin ties, and who cooperate in certain kinds of activities. nuclear family A married couple and their children.

household A group of people who live together, share the use of family wealth and property, rely on one another for emotional support, pool their labor and resources to support the family and live in the same house or compound. extended family A group of related nuclear families.

incest taboo Universal rule against members of the same family having sex, marrying or producing children. exogamous rules Marriage rules prohibiting individuals from marrying a member of their own social group or category.

endogamous rules Marriage rules requiring individuals to marry some member of their own social group or category. monogamy Each individual is allowed to have only one spouse at a time.

polygyny One man is allowed to have multiple wives.
polyandry One woman is allowed to have multiple husbands.

group marriage Several women and several men are married to one another simultaneously. polygamy Plural spouses.

marriage alliances A marriage that establishes an alliance between members of two kin groups. levirate Custom whereby a widow marries a male relative of her deceased husband.

sororate Custom where by a widower marries a female relative of his deceased wife. bridewealth Custom in which a prospective groom and his relatives are required to transfer goods to the relatives of the bride to validate the marriage.

brideservice Custom in which a man spends a period of time working for the family of his wife. dowry Custom in which the family of a woman transfers property or wealth to her upon her marriage.

patrilocal residence Couples live with or near the husband's parents.

matrilocal residence Couples live with or near the wife's parents. bilocal residence Postmarital residence is with either the wife's or the husband's parents according to choice.

neolocal residence Couples establish a separate household apart from both the husband and wife's parents. avunculocal residence Couples live with the maternal uncle of the husband.
