1 Numeracy M4_Jun 2011 The van Hiele model of geometric thought outlines the hierarchy of levels through which students progress as they develop of geometric ideas. The model clarifies many of the shortcomings in traditional instruction and offers ways to improve it. Pierre van Hiele and his wife, Dina van Hiele-Geldof, focused on getting students to the appropriate level to be successful in high school Geometry.

2 What is Numeracy ? ability to reason with numbers and other mathematical concepts. To be numerically literate, a person has to be comfortable with logic and reasoning. areas involved include: basic numbers, orders of magnitude, geometry, algebra, probability and statistics.

3 Numeracy Numeracy is a proficiency which is developed mainly in mathematics, but also in other subjects. It is more than an ability to do arithmetic. It involves developing confidence and competence with numbers and measures.

4 Having good numeracy skills
Have good number sense Know their number facts Able to figure out answers mentally Know when & how to use a calculator Make good sense of problems Can explain their methods / reasons Able to judge the reasonableness of their answers Mcan make predictions from graphs, diagrams etc As a teacher you can help children to acquire this proficiency by giving a sharp focus to the relevant aspects of study for mathematics.

5 THE NATIONAL NUMERACY STRATEGY
The NNS enables teachers to provide pupils with a firm foundation in Mathematics and set ambitious targets for raising standards in these key skills

6 THE PRIMARY FRAMEWORK There are seven strands of learning in the mathematics curriculum in the primary phase. The National Numeracy Strategy (1999), The Primary Framework for Literacy & Mathematics (2006),

7 Seven strands of learning in the mathematics curriculum
Using and applying mathematics Counting and understanding numbers Knowing and using number facts Calculating Understanding shape Measuring Handling data

8 Cara Melaksanakan Pengiraan

14 Teknik Pengiraan Mental
Strategi penambahan 69+27 Strategi penolakan 75-29 Strategi pendaraban 8 x 15 Strategi pembahagian 328/8
