Chapter 26 Lesson 4 Safety on the Road
Objective: Describe five ways drivers and pedestrians can stay safe on the road. Main Idea: Drivers, pedestrians, and others need to follow the rules to stay safe Following the rules and paying attention are keys to safety.

Myth or Fact 1. By not fastening the safety belt, a passenger has a good chance of surviving an accident by being thrown clear of the car. 2. By not wearing a safety belt, a passenger might be thrown from the car in an accident. That would normally not bee helpful, though, There is a 25% greater chance of being killed in an accident if you are thrown from the car. 3. You do not need to wear a safety belt if you’re driving only a short distance from home. 4. About 75% of accidents that cause death happen within 25 miles of a person’s home.

Reduce your speed if… the road is wet or icy

Honking, shouting, flashing lights Cutting off another car, deliberately hitting another car. Defensive driving – means being aware of potential hazards on the road and taking action to avoid them. Threatening another driver.

In small groups discuss: What could you do if you were at a party and a friend of yours was drinking alcohol and was obviously drunk. He was getting ready to get in his car and drive home?
